Terms of Use & Disclaimer
Last updated: 9 July 2026
1. About this service
“Letters from Cairns Locals” (the “Service”) is a personal, non-commercial, hobby-run space for sharing information aimed at Japanese speakers living in or visiting Cairns. It isn’t a business or an official body — think of it as neighbours chatting over the fence, kept as a record. By using the Service you agree to these Terms.
2. Operator & contact
- Operator: Sayaka Mochida (individual)
- Contact / reporting: ponglish.yukarizu@gmail.com (or via the contact form on the Service)
3. Members & posting
- Anyone can read articles, spots and visit notes (no account needed).
- Reading the contents of comments and replies, and member features, are for members only.
- Currently, logged-in members can post (some boards may be operator-only). In future, posting may move to people approved through a Facebook group; this is not yet implemented, and the Terms will be updated when it changes.
- Non-members (guests) may also send comments (with a display name).
- You are responsible for managing your account (email, password, etc.).
4. Posting rules
To protect the Service’s “sanctuary” (no ads, no flattery), please follow these rules:
- No posts intended as advertising, promotion or self-promotion.
- External links are, in principle, not allowed or subject to operator approval.
- Don’t mix “self-introduction” with “information” (no slipping your own promotion into the info).
- Stealth marketing (hiding paid promotion) is prohibited.
- Subjects the operator has a stake in (e.g. a friend’s shop) are either not posted or clearly marked as a “related party”.
5. Prohibited
The following posts and conduct are prohibited:
- Illegal acts or promoting illegal services
- Multi-level marketing (pyramid schemes) or other solicitation
- Posting others’ personal information without consent (doxxing)
- Trading or promoting drugs, dangerous goods, or anything unsafe or unlawful
- Infringing others’ rights (copyright, likeness, privacy, etc.)
- Impersonation, false information, discrimination, defamation or harassment
- Interfering with the operation of the Service
6. Your posts (rights)
- Copyright in your posts stays with you.
- You grant the Service permission to publish, store, translate and display your posts (the Service shows Japanese/English translations — see the Privacy Policy).
7. Moderation
- The operator may hide or delete posts that breach these Terms or are otherwise inappropriate, without notice, and may suspend accounts in serious cases.
- Safety-related information always passes through the operator (editor). The platform never auto-endorses something as “safe”.
8. Changes to these Terms
We may revise these Terms as needed. Revisions take effect when posted on this page.
9. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia, whose courts have jurisdiction.
Disclaimer
1. Accuracy of information
Information here is one person’s experience and know-how at a point in time. Prices, opening hours and conditions may have changed. It is your responsibility to check the original, official or public sources. The Service does not guarantee accuracy or currency.
2. The operator is only an intermediary
The content of posts is the responsibility of each contributor. The operator does not guarantee the truth of posts and is not responsible for their content. The Service shows “whose experience, and when” as provenance, and leaves the judgement to you.
3. Your own responsibility
The results of any action taken based on information here (visiting, driving, swimming, eating, transactions, etc.) are your own responsibility.
4. Safety information
- Reports of danger, scams or trouble are treated as a heads-up, not as “confirmed”, until several independent accounts line up.
- For emergencies or anything life-threatening, do not rely on the Service — always contact the authorities (police, ambulance, lifeguards, etc.).
5. Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, the operator (a non-commercial individual) is not liable for any damage to users or third parties arising from use of the Service or its information.
